CABE - the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment

We provide expert independent design advice to improve the quality of what gets built in England. For over 80 years, UK governments of all persuasions have believed that it is essential to get independent advice on proposals for significant new buildings and spaces.

Since CABE replaced the Royal Fine Art Commission in 1999, we have reviewed more than 3,000 proposals for major developments. But CABE also has a wider role to champion and lead the public and professional debate about how to create great places.

CABE Case study: Mixed Communities Initiative in Margate

The Department of Communities and Local Government's Mixed Communities Initiative is designed to 'consolidate' a number of separate existing initiatives such as Safer, Stronger Communities, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and New Deal for Communities.  The idea was that by combining these initiatives, progress could be made in particularly deprived areas - such as parts of Margate.  CABE offered enabling support to Margate to deliver the Mixed Communities initiative in 2008.

CABE's enabler provided approximately five days of targeted, hands-on support to the client.  Specific tasks undertaken by the enabler included brief writing and development, including economic studies and an area master plan, complemented by CLG supporting information, an assessment of the project process and stages, and assistance with developer procurement processes.  CABE's enabler co-ordinated meetings of key stakeholders and brokered agreements with different client groups to ensure the Mixed Communities initiative moved forward.  Their input ensured the local authority developed a clear approach to identify the initial steps needed to harness the full potential of the diverse funding strands.
